Ellen G. White -- the Myth and the Truth. Plagiarism (part 1)

Ellen G. White -- the Myth and the Truth
by Å. Kaspersen

10 -Plagiarism

In volume ten of the voluminous SDA Bible Commentary, there is a statement on how Ellen White's writings came into final shape,

"Carefully devised rules to safeguard the authenticity of the materials they handled, as well as a final careful reading by Mr. White, ensured a finished product that was truly the author's." (SDA Bible Commentary, Vol. 10: Encyclopedia, p. 1592. Emphasis supplied.)

According to what we know today, which is based on solid documentation, the above statement can be said to be quite inaccurate.

Plagiarism in the Writings of Ellen G. White
This material regarding the writings of Ellen G. White is part of a Field Guide profile on Seventh-day Adventism. Click here to go to the main page of the SDA profile.

The details of Seventh-day Adventist Prophetess Ellen G. White's (EGW) career of blatant plagiarism can be seen in a number of books and on many sites on the Internet. These books and sites include not only general commentary, but very specific samples of quotations from EGW's books alongside quotations from the books from which the material was obviously copied. In some instances, the copying consisted of following the exact flow of ideas and examples, in others it was loose paraphrases of short or long sections. But in many, many other instances it consisted of phrases, sentences and passages taken word from word from the writings of others without any indication that such material was not her own writing. In all of these instances, Ellen G White most assuredly presented the material as being straight from her own pen, without even any "influence" from other writers, let alone direct copying from them. And in many instances, she even prefaced material directly plagiarized from others with words such as "I was shown," or "I saw," or "It was presented to me," which were specifically indicating that she was claiming the material to be directly, divinely "revealed" to her straight from Heaven.
This short overview of the matter of her plagiarism offers only a tiny bit of background material to this huge issue. For those who would like to examine the voluminous proof of the plagiarism allegations, see the links at the end of this article.

Visions Copied from Foy?

Visions Copied from Foy?
D. Anderson

Who was William Foy?

In 1835, William Foy, an African-American living in New England, gave his heart to Christ and became a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. In 1842, while preparing to take holy orders as an Episcopal minister he had two visions. Foy began traveling around the local area relating his visions to various Millerite groups. Adventist historian J.N. Loughborough writes:
"Having a good command of language, with fine descriptive powers, he created a sensation wherever he went. By invitation he went from city to city to tell of the wonderful things he had seen; and in order to accommodate the vast crowds who assembled to hear him, large halls were secured, where he related to thousands what had been shown him of the heavenly world..."1

A letter from A.T. Jones

Ellen G. White -- the Myth and the Truth
by Å. Kaspersen

7 -A letter from A.T. Jones

In the month of April, 1906, Ellen G. White sent out a testimony in which she mentions several persons by name. These were well-known men within the Adventist denomination, who had asked pertinent questions about her inspiration. In this testimony, which she claimed was based on a vision, she asks these men to write down their perplexities, and she would do her best to answer them.

Several of the brethren who were mentioned by name did as she asked them to do, but they never received the courtesy of a reply. One of the men who responded to the call, was A.T. Jones. Here follows portions of the letter he wrote to Ellen G. White, dated April 26, 1909. He never got a reply to this letter, for obvious reasons - what could she say? Once more, her false visions had put herself into an embarassing position.

The Life of Ellen White by D.M. Canright
Chapter 10 - A Great Plagiarist
________________________________________

About 1904, Dr. J.H. Kellogg and his Sanitarium associates, it was learned, were not accepting as from God all of Mrs. White's writings. They found numerous contradictions in them, and believed that many of them were inspired by the officials, and were calling attention to some of these things.

The Desire of Ages Project

The Desire of Ages Project
The Conclusions of Fred Veltman, Ph.D
Taken from Ministry, December 1990

Introduction
In 1982, Dr. Fred Veltman, then chairman of the religion department of Pacific Union College, was asked by the Seventh-day Adventist church to analyze the charges of plagiarism brought by Walter Rea and others against Ellen White. Dr. Veltman spent eight years at church expense studying The Desire of Ages (hereafter referred to as DA). His research was printed in the Adventist church's official magazine for clergy named Ministry. Following are Veltman's five conclusions excerpted from the December, 1990, issue of Ministry (pp. 11-14):

Pre-Ellen White Health Reformers
Was Ellen White Really Ahead of Her Time?
Compiled by D. Anderson

Contrary to popular myth, Mrs. White brought few, if any, new health reforms to the world. Other popular health reformers were promoting most, if not all of her teachings on health, before she began teaching them.

It is as truly a sin against Heaven, to violate a law of life, as to break one of the ten commandments" (Larkin B. Coles, Philosophy of Health (1853), p. 215).

"It is as truly a sin to violate the laws of our being as it is to break the ten commandments. To do either is to break God's laws." (EGW, Christian Temperance (1890), p. 53.)

"The sympathy existing between the mind and the body is so great, that when one is affected, both are affected" (Larkin B. Coles, Philosophy of Health (1853), p. 127).
"The sympathy which exists between the mind and the body is very great. When one is affected, the other responds." (EGW, Testimonies, vol 4, p. 60 (1876).)

"Flesh eating is certainly not necessary to health or strength. . . .If it be used, it must be a matter of fancy. . . .When we increase the proportion of our animal nature, we suppress the intellectual. . . .The use of flesh tends to create a grossness of body and spirit" (Larkin B. Coles: Philosophy of Health, (1853), p. 64-67)
". . .flesh meat is not necessary for health or strength. If used it is because a depraved appetite craves it. When the animal propensities are increased, the intellectual and moral powers are decreased. The use of the flesh of animals tends to cause a grossness of body and benumbs the fine sensibilities of the mind." (EGW, Testimonies, vol 2, p. 63 (1868).)
